The Staffordshire Writing Skills Grid
The Staffordshire Writing Skills Grids are a development of the successful Writing Skills Ladders, which have been used widely by schools throughout Staffordshire and beyond, to assist teachers in analysing pupils' writing and setting appropriate writing targets. They have been expanded to provide guidance relating to sub-levels for National Curriculum levels 1-5. A bank of non-narrative grids has also been developed to provide more genre-specific assessment criteria and there is detailed guidance about the assessment of writing for pupils working towards Level 1 - for Foundation Stage pupils, a grid using Foundation Stage Profile criteria - and for older children, particularly those with learning difficulties, who are working significantly below age-related expectations, a grid using P Levels criteria.
The resource has three sections - a general introduction, including specific guidance on how to use the grids; the bank of Staffordshire Writing Skills Grids and some examples of children's scripts which have been assessed using the grids.
